HCPCS codes are the shorthand every payer uses to identify a piece of equipment. If you are asking the VA for a specific crutch, the code is the difference between a request that can be processed and one that gets interpreted.

Descriptors are the 2026 HCPCS long descriptors, quoted as written. Codes E0100 to E0105 cover canes and are not listed here.
The part that causes trouble
Why Medicare and the VA disagree about E0117
Medicare Part B
Does not cover E0117. The relevant local coverage determination is LCD L33733, and its policy article enumerates E0110 through E0116. The articulating spring-assisted crutch is simply not on the covered list.
This is the sentence that gets repeated to veterans, usually by someone acting in good faith who deals with Medicare all day.
VA health care
Runs on its own authority, its own schedule and its own prosthetics process. Equipment is issued through the Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service at your VA medical center, not adjudicated against a Medicare LCD.
So if you are a veteran going through the VA, a Medicare exclusion is not the rule that governs your request. Coverage is still the VA's decision, but it is the VA's decision to make.
